The Atlanta Family Vacation Strategy
Why Families Choose Woodstock as Their Atlanta Base Camp
Planning a family vacation to Atlanta means navigating a lot of choices — where to stay, how to see the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola and the BeltLine and Piedmont Park without exhausting everyone in the process. The mistake most families make is booking a downtown Atlanta hotel at $250–$400 per night and trying to cram everything into walking distance.
Experienced Atlanta family travelers have discovered a better approach: base yourself 45 minutes north in Woodstock, book a full house like Casa Lago Azul, and day-trip into the city when you want to. You get the attractions of Atlanta on your schedule — without spending every night in a loud hotel next to Centennial Park. And unlike downtown, your base camp comes with Lake Allatoona 5 minutes away, a hot tub, a game room, and a fire pit for the evenings.
Our 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom house sleeps 8 guests comfortably. Families with kids love the game room (rainy day solution), the movie room (travel-day wind-down), and the fire pit (every evening tradition). The full kitchen saves you $100+ per day in restaurant bills. And after a long day at the Georgia Aquarium, coming home to a hot tub is considerably better than a hotel pool.
Day Trip Destinations
Atlanta Family Attractions
All of these major Atlanta family destinations are 45–60 minutes from Casa Lago Azul via I-75 South — an easy day trip with minimal highway navigation:
Georgia Aquarium 45 min
The world's largest aquarium with over 10 million gallons of water and 100,000+ animals. Whale sharks, manta rays, beluga whales, and the largest collection of aquatic life anywhere on earth. The signature Ocean Voyager exhibit — an underwater tunnel through a 6.3-million-gallon tank — is genuinely awe-inspiring for all ages.
World of Coca-Cola 45 min
Right next to the Aquarium, this iconic Atlanta museum tells the story of the world's most recognized brand. The tasting room alone — with Coca-Cola products from over 100 countries — is worth the visit. Kids love the Vault of the Secret Formula exhibit and the 4D movie experience.
CNN Center & Centennial Park 45 min
Centennial Olympic Park — the heart of the 1996 Olympics — is the anchor of downtown Atlanta's tourist district. The fountain rings are a kids' favorite in summer months. CNN Center next door offers studio tours. The whole cluster (Aquarium, Coca-Cola, CNN, Park) is within 5 minutes' walking of each other.
Ponce City Market & BeltLine 50 min
Ponce City Market — a converted 1920s Sears warehouse — is now Atlanta's premier food hall and retail destination, anchored by the Atlanta BeltLine trail. The rooftop amusements at Skyline Park are a kids' favorite. The BeltLine's Eastside Trail offers miles of car-free walking/biking through Atlanta neighborhoods.
Between Atlanta Days
What to Do When You're Not in Atlanta
The best Atlanta family vacations aren't all Atlanta. Mix your city days with lake and nature days, and you'll have a vacation where the kids talk about both the whale sharks and the hot tub for weeks afterward.
Lake Allatoona 5 min
12,000-acre lake with swim beaches, boat ramps, and hiking trails. Red Top Mountain State Park has a lifeguarded swimming area perfect for families with young children. Rent kayaks or paddleboards for a morning activity that doesn't require driving anywhere.
Downtown Woodstock 10 min
A genuine Southern small-city downtown with boutique shops, ice cream shops, restaurants, and a Saturday farmers market that kids actually enjoy. Elm Street Bakery for morning pastries. Taqueria del Sol for lunch. Reformation Brewery for evening beers while kids play on the patio.
Blankets Creek Trail System 15 min
One of Georgia's most beloved mountain biking trail systems, with 15+ miles of trails from beginner-friendly loops to technical singletrack. Rental bikes available nearby. The beginner green trails are perfect for kids learning to mountain bike in a safe, forested environment.
Truist Park & The Battery 35 min
Combine your Atlanta family trip with an Atlanta Braves game. Truist Park is a family-friendly ballpark, and The Battery Atlanta surrounding it has enough food and entertainment for a full evening. Check the Braves schedule before booking your dates.
